What are Adverbs?
Adverbs are words that describe or modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
They tell us how, when, where, how often, or to what extent something happens.
Examples:
She sings beautifully.
The boy ran quickly.
We will leave tomorrow.
The puppy is very cute.
They searched everywhere.
Types of Adverbs
There are different types of adverbs based on what they describe.
Adverbs of Manner
Adverbs of Place
Adverbs of Frequency
Adverbs of Degree or Quantity
Adverbs of Time
Interrogative Adverbs
Adverbs of Manner
Adverbs of manner tell us how an action happens. They answer the question how.
They usually end in -ly.
Examples:
The girl danced gracefully. (How did the girl dance?)
He answered correctly. (How did he answer?)
She spoke softly. (How did she speak?)
The soldier fought bravely. (How did the soldier fight?)
The child completed the work neatly. (How did the child complete the work?)
Adverbs of Place
Adverbs of place tell us where something happens. They answer the question where.
Examples:
The children are playing outside. (Where are the children playing?)
Please sit there. (Where should you sit?)
She looked everywhere. (Where did she look?)
The birds flew away. (Where did the birds fly?)
The ball is kept here. (Where is the ball kept?)
Adverbs of Time
Adverbs of time tell us when something happens. They answer the question when.
Examples:
We will go to school tomorrow. (When will we go to school?)
She called me yesterday. (When did she call?)
The train will arrive soon. (When will the train arrive?)
He completed his homework early. (When did he complete his homework?)
They moved to a new house recently. (When did they move?)
Adverbs of Frequency
Adverbs of frequency tell us how frequently something happens. They answer the question how often.
Examples:
I always wake up early. (How often do I wake up early?)
She often reads storybooks. (How often does she read storybooks?)
We sometimes visit the park. (How often do we visit the park?)
He is never late. (How often is he late?)
They rarely eat junk food. (How often do they eat junk food?)
Adverbs of Degree or Quantity
These adverbs tell us the extent or degree something happens. They answer the question how much.
Examples:
She is very smart. (How smart is she?)
The water is too cold. (How cold is the water?)
I am quite tired. (How tired am I?)
The movie was extremely interesting. (How interesting was the movie?)
He almost finished his work. (To what extent did he finish his work?)
Interrogative Adverbs
Interrogative adverbs are used to ask questions.
Examples:
When will you come? (Asking about time)
Where do you live? (Asking about place)
Why are you crying? (Asking about reason)
How did you solve the sum? (Asking about manner)
When does the holiday begin? (Asking about time)
Position of Adverbs
Adverbs can appear in different places in a sentence.
At the end: She spoke politely.
Before the verb: She quickly ran home.
After the verb: He sings well.
Before an adjective: It is very hot today.
At the beginning: Yesterday, we visited the museum.
