Introduction to Articles: Meeting 'A' and 'An'

In English, we use special little words called articles to talk about things. When we want to talk about just one thing (a single thing), we use the words a or an.

These words tell our friends that we are talking about one object, not many!

What are 'A' and 'An'?

A and An are helpers. We use them before a noun (a word for a person, place, or thing) when there is only one of that thing.

  • Use a when the next word starts with a consonant sound.

  • Use an when the next word starts with a vowel sound.

The Vowel Sounds

Vowels are special letters. There are 5 main vowels:

  • a

  • e

  • i

  • o

  • u

The Consonant Sounds

Consonants are all the other letters in the alphabet, like:

b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z

When to Use 'A'

We use the word a when the very next word starts with a consonant (the letters that are not vowels).

Examples:

  • a cat

  • a dog

  • a ball

  • a tree

  • a house

Note: It is the sound at the start of the word that matters most!

When to Use 'An'

We use the word an when the very next word starts with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u). This makes it easier to say the words together without a bumpy sound.

Examples:

  • an apple

  • an egg

  • an igloo

  • an octopus

  • an umbrella

What is 'The'?

In English, we have a special little word called the. This word is called an article. We use the when we are talking about one specific thing that we already know about.

Using 'The' for Things We Already Know

We use the when we are not talking about “any” thing, but a “special” thing.

1. The Second Time We Talk About Something

When we talk about something for the first time, we use a or an. But when we talk about it again, it becomes a “known” thing, so we use the.

  • First time: “I saw a cat.” (It could be any cat!)

  • Second time:The cat was orange.” (Now we know which cat you mean—the one you just saw!)

2. There is Only One

We use the when there is only one of something in the whole world or in the room.

  • The sun (There is only one sun in the sky).

  • The moon (There is only one moon at night).

  • The floor (There is only one floor in the room we are standing on).

Comparing 'A' and 'The'

It is helpful to see the difference between using a (for any thing) and the (for a specific thing).

Word

When to use it

Example

A / An

When talking about any one thing.

“I want a cookie.” (Any cookie from the jar!)

The

When talking about a special or known thing.

“I want the cookie with sprinkles.” (Only that one!)

Examples in Real Life

  • At School:

    • “Please pick up a pencil.” (Any pencil will do.)

    • “Please pick up the red pencil.” (Only the red one!)

  • At Home:

    • “I see a dog in the yard.” (A new dog!)

    • The dog is barking at me.” (The same dog I just mentioned.)

  • In Nature:

    • “Look at a star!” (Any star in the sky.)

    • The stars are very bright tonight.” (All the specific stars we see right now.)

Note: We use the to point our words toward a specific object so that the person listening knows exactly what we are talking about.
