Other Class 5 Worksheets
Addition of Large Numbers
Addition means finding the total by combining two or more numbers. In Class 5, students learn to add numbers with 7, 7, and even 8 digits. Before adding, always arrange the numbers according to their place values (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, lakhs, etc.). Start adding from the ones place and move towards the left.
Example
14,32,156
+ 12,15,423
------------
26,47,579Explanation:
- Ones: 6 + 3 = 9
- Tens: 5 + 2 = 7
- Hundreds: 1 + 4 = 5
- Thousands: 2 + 5 = 7
- Ten Thousands: 3 + 1 = 4
- Lakhs: 4 + 2 = 6
- Ten Lakhs: 1 + 1 = 2
Answer: 26,47,579
Example (8-Digit)
2,43,56,712
+ 1,25,31,186
---------------
3,68,87,898
Tip: Always write the numbers one below the other so that each place value is in the correct column.
Addition with Carrying (Regrouping)
When the sum of digits in a place value is 10 or more, we carry 1 to the next higher place value. This process is called carrying or regrouping.
Example
48,79,856
+ 35,68,947
---------------
84,48,803Step-by-Step
- Ones: 6 + 7 = 13 → Write 3, carry 1
- Tens: 5 + 4 + 1 = 10 → Write 0, carry 1
- Hundreds: 8 + 9 + 1 = 18 → Write 8, carry 1
- Thousands: 9 + 8 + 1 = 18 → Write 8, carry 1
- Ten Thousands: 7 + 6 + 1 = 14 → Write 4, carry 1
- Lakhs: 8 + 5 + 1 = 14 → Write 4, carry 1
- Ten Lakhs: 4 + 3 + 1 = 8
Answer: 84,48,803
Tip: Don’t forget to add the carried number to the next column.
Addition of Multiple Numbers
Sometimes we need to add three or more large numbers. Arrange all the numbers according to their place values and add each column carefully from right to left. Carry whenever necessary.
Example
12,34,567
23,45,678
+ 31,22,455
--------------
67,02,700Step-by-Step
- Ones: 7 + 8 + 5 = 20 → Write 0, carry 2
- Tens: 6 + 7 + 5 + 2 = 20 → Write 0, carry 2
- Hundreds: 5 + 6 + 4 + 2 = 17 → Write 7, carry 1
- Thousands: 4 + 5 + 2 + 1 = 12 → Write 2, carry 1
- Ten Thousands: 3 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 10 → Write 0, carry 1
- Lakhs: 2 + 3 + 1 + 1 = 7
- Ten Lakhs: 1 + 2 + 3 = 6
Answer: 67,02,700
Tip: Add one place value at a time and check your carrying carefully.
Missing Digit Addition Problems
In these questions, one or more digits are missing. Use your knowledge of addition and carrying to find the missing digit.
Example
5□,34,218
+ 21,45,367
-------------
74,79,585Solution
Compare each place value.
- Ones: 8 + 7 = 15 → Write 5, carry 1 ✔
- Tens: 1 + 6 + 1 = 8 ✔
- Hundreds: 2 + 3 = 5 ✔
- Thousands: 4 + 5 = 9 ✔
- Ten Thousands: 3 + 4 = 7 ✔
- Lakhs: □ + 1 = 4
So,
□ = 3
Check:
53,34,218
+ 21,45,367
-------------
74,79,585Answer: The missing digit is 3.
Subtraction of Large Numbers
Subtraction means finding the difference between two numbers. Arrange the larger number above the smaller number according to place values and subtract from the ones place towards the left.
Example
87,65,432
- 34,21,210
-------------
53,44,222Step-by-Step
- Ones: 2 − 0 = 2
- Tens: 3 − 1 = 2
- Hundreds: 4 − 2 = 2
- Thousands: 5 − 1 = 4
- Ten Thousands: 6 − 2 = 4
- Lakhs: 7 − 4 = 3
- Ten Lakhs: 8 − 3 = 5
Answer: 53,44,222
Example (8-Digit)
3,45,67,890
- 1,23,45,670
---------------
2,22,22,220Tip: Always ensure the larger number is written on top before subtracting.
Subtraction with Borrowing (Regrouping)
If the digit in the top number is smaller than the digit below it, borrow 1 from the next higher place value. This process is called borrowing or regrouping.
Example
72,30,402
- 38,75,864
-------------
33,54,538Step-by-Step
- Ones: 2 is smaller than 4, so borrow from tens.
- 12 − 4 = 8
- Tens: After borrowing, 9 − 6 = 3
- Hundreds: 3 is smaller than 8, borrow from thousands.
- 13 − 8 = 5
- Thousands: After borrowing, 9 − 5 = 4
- Ten Thousands: 2 is smaller than 7, borrow from lakhs.
- 12 − 7 = 5
- Lakhs: After borrowing, 1 − 8 is not possible, borrow from ten lakhs.
- 11 − 8 = 3
- Ten Lakhs: 6 − 3 = 3
Answer: 33,54,538
Tip: After borrowing, always reduce the digit from which you borrowed by 1 before continuing the subtraction.
