Class 6 Articles Worksheet with Answers Free PDF
What are Articles?
Articles are one of the very first grammar topics introduced to young learners, and mastering them lays the foundation for accurate English usage in later classes. In simple terms, articles are the small words — a, an, and the — that we place before nouns to show whether we are talking about something general or something specific.
English grammar divides articles into two broad categories: the indefinite article (a/an), used when referring to any one member of a general group, and the definite article (the), used when referring to a particular, already-known person, place or thing. There is also a third, often-overlooked case called the zero article, where no article is used at all — for example, before plural or uncountable nouns used in a general sense, or before proper nouns such as names of people and most countries.
A common source of confusion for Class 6 students is the omission of a/an. The indefinite article is dropped before plural nouns (“Dogs are loyal animals”), uncountable nouns (“Milk is healthy”), and proper nouns (“Delhi is a big city”). Learning to recognise these patterns — rather than memorising rules in isolation — is what genuinely improves a child’s grammar sense.
Equally important is knowing when ‘the’ is used: before something already mentioned or understood, before superlatives (“the tallest building”), before unique objects (“the sun”, “the moon”), and before well-known rivers, mountain ranges, and monuments (“the Ganga”, “the Himalayas”, “the Taj Mahal”). On the other hand, students must also learn when ‘the’ is not used — before most proper nouns, names of countries (except a few like “the United States”), languages, meals, and games (“They play cricket every evening”). Once a child can confidently tell these situations apart, the whole topic of articles starts to feel far less tricky.
