What are Conjunctions?
A conjunction is a word that joins two words, phrases, or clauses together. Conjunctions help us connect ideas smoothly instead of writing many short, disconnected sentences. Common conjunctions include and, but, or, because, although, and so.
Example: Riya likes drawing, and she likes singing too. (Here, ‘and’ joins two ideas about Riya.)
Without a conjunction, the two ideas would have to be written as two separate sentences: ‘Riya likes drawing. She likes singing too.’ The conjunction makes the sentence smoother and more natural to read.
Types of Conjunctions
For this Class 6 Conjunctions Worksheet, conjunctions are mainly grouped into three types, based on how they connect words or clauses.
Coordinating Conjunctions
These join two words, phrases, or independent clauses that are equally important. There are seven common coordinating conjunctions: and, but, or, so, yet, for, nor.
Example: He is intelligent, but he is careless.
Subordinating Conjunctions
These join a main (independent) clause with a subordinate (dependent) clause. The dependent clause cannot stand alone as a complete sentence. Examples include because, although, since, if, when, until, unless.
Example: We stayed indoors because it was raining heavily.
Correlative Conjunctions
These conjunctions work in pairs to join equal parts of a sentence. Common pairs include either…or, neither…nor, both…and, not only…but also, and whether…or.
Example: She is both talented and hardworking.
